We set out to explore the 1972 Munich Olympic Park, see the BMW Museum and take a nice bike tour of the city.
First, the Olympic Park is so beautiful. The tent-like structure effortlessly spans the area. The steel structure is held up in tension with long cables stretching across the grounds. The facility was designed by German architect Frie Otto who used his knowledge of structure and design to create an amazing building and capture the attention of spectators across the world.
Second, we visited the BMW Museum. I do not know much about cars, nor do I care much about them so I did not enjoy the school outing here. It was cool to see, however, I think this could have been a free-time activity. My favorite part of this was seeing the old advertising created by BMW. Early 1900s design in Germany was the best around the world because the The Bauhaus and there were lots of gorgeous Bauhaus-esque graphics and objects scattered through the museum.
Lastly, the bike tour. We took a great 3 hour bike tour of Munich. On this tour we stopped by several monuments, buildings, local spots and of course a beer garden. We learned that most of Munich was destroyed in the war, so there were lots of reconstruction efforts to rebuild it. It was destroyed so bad because it was the Capital of Nazi Germany...in part because Hitler lived there as a young adult and was fond of the city. We also rode through a lovely park that was littered with people sunbathing, picnicking, studying, and enjoying the summer weather. Here were stopped at the Chinese Beer Garden. The beer garden has a Pagoda in the center and is on of the largest beer gardens in the world, holding over a thousands patrons. This park also has river surfing! We made a 10 minute stop at a local and tourist hot spot to catch some people surfing in the river.
On our bike home we biked along to river, enjoying the afternoon sun.
