Today, we took the train 1.5 hours outside the city to visit Seele. Seele is a company that manufactures elaborate facade and roof systems. They specialize in curtain wall fabrication and have worked on world famous projects such as the Apple Stores, World Culture Building in Saudi Arabia, the Bird's Nest and many more.
Seele is comprised of 3 subcompanies:
-Seele: for facades that have never been done before (steel or alluminum)
-Iconic Skin: for smaller projects, product based facades like prints
-Sedak: for raw glass refinement (it can refine glass 20meters long--largest in the world)
Seele offers two types of glass 1.) all glass construction (where glass is also structural) or 2.) unitised glass.
We also learned that Seele provides on-site managers that work with trade unions to help carry out the construction of their unique curtain wall designs. These managers help coordinate deliveries and on-site logistics
.
We began our visit with a brief presentation by Seele Marketer and the she toured us around the fabrication, painting, packaging, mockup and testing facilities. Unfortunately, there was little opportunity to take photos our visit for privacy purposes, but it was a really cool place.
While we were see their fabrication shop, we were told that Seele is all manual welding because the structures are always different and unique, so it is not worth it to have robots welding.
During our visit we got to visit the mockup and test facility. We were informed that Seele does visual mockups, load tests, pendulum impact test, hurricane tests, theromocyclying test and wind tests. The wind tests are conducted with the use of an old propeller from a Russian Airplane.
When walking past the shipping facility, our guide pointed out the QR Codes being placed on the shipping containers. These codes pull up information about tools, installation, clash detection and videos to assist the workers on-site.
Dinner:
Dr. Azhar and his family as well as another student are leaving a day early as they head to other countries to begin another vacation, so we had a our Farewell Dinner tonight. We ate at Augustiner Keller again, but this time we ate at the restaurant instead of the brewery. They had delicious entrees, deserts and beer...I think we all are enjoying the liter beer life-style.
It has been a fantastic trip, a trip of a life-time really and I am so thankful to have been apart of it Auburn University's Building Science program!
