Today we had a fanatic walking tour! We took the subway and a tram to Strahov Monastery. It was located on the top of a hill with scenic overlook of Prague...very peaceful. From there we walked down the hill to Prague Castle. The rich combination of architectural styles (Romanesque, Renaissance, Baroque, Gothic) were amazing. I really enjoyed walking around the Castle, seeing inside the cathedral, climbing the bell and exploring the armory and dungeon. I think my favorite part of the Castle was learning more about the Czech history from our tour guide. The Czech Republic has a complex history which is seen throughout the fabric of the city. We learned about St. John Nepomuk who died for keeping the Queen's confession a secrete and when we crossed the Charles Bridge we were able to rubbed him for a wish.
I think one of my favorite things we saw on this walking tour was the John Lennon Wall. This was is famous because when the Czech Republic was still under the influence on communism this was used as a place where people could express their disapproval of the government. Even today, this wall acts a public place where you can secretly express yourself, your views and your concerns. I heard some students say that writing on this wall isn't going to make any difference in the world, but I think they missed the point. This wall stands for something bigger. It may not change the world, but the idea of it provides a place where people are not afraid to demonstrate their frustrations and who they are. It was the power to start movements because all of the sudden you aren't the only one who is feeling the same way.
Lastly, we ended our tour at the Old Town Hall. The location of the first and longest functions astronomical clock in the world...and it is breath taking.
Prague is a city that I have instantly fallen in love with!
